About Barong (Balinese Mythology)
Barong is a sacred and powerful figure in Balinese mythology, often depicted as a mystical creature known as keket. In Bali, Indonesia, Barong represents protection, health, and good fortune, serving as the eternal counterpart to Rangda, the queen of dark forces (also known as Calonarang).In traditional Balinese dance-drama, Barong engages in a symbolic battle against Rangda, illustrating the balance between good and evil. One of the most iconic moments is the kris dance, where performers enter a deep trance and press ceremonial daggers against themselves, yet remain unharmed under spiritual protection.
The Barong figure is traditionally brought to life by two dancers within an intricately crafted costume. The statue reflects these rich cultural elements, featuring detailed craftsmanship and symbolic ornamentation, including a beard adorned with frangipani flowers, believed to embody spiritual energy.
